Best day to launch on Product Hunt? Here's what 4,962 launches in 2026 actually show.

I got curious whether "launch on the weekend" is actually good advice or just a myth people repeat. So I pulled every Product Hunt launch from Jan 1 to Sep 1, 2026, 4,962 launches across 244 days, and looked at how many points it actually took to hit #1, top 3, and top 5 on each day of the week.

Some of it confirmed the myth. Some of it didn't.

The gap is bigger than I expected
Saturday needs a median of 165 points to break top 5. Thursday needs 235. That's a 70-point gap just from picking a different day.

Weekends aren't just easier, they're way less crowded
Tuesday averages 30.4 launches a day. Saturday averages 10.7. Fewer competitors, lower bar, most of the effect comes from volume, not some algorithm quirk.

If you can't launch on a weekend, Friday is your best bet
205 median points for top 5, the lowest of any weekday and noticeably easier than Thursday.

Tuesday's hidden trap
Tuesday has more total launches than Monday (1,064 vs 629), but it's actually easier to crack top 5 on Tuesday (210 points vs 220). More competitors doesn't always mean a higher bar. Monday's smaller field just competes harder per launch.

One more thing: I didn't build this by hand. I asked Databox's AI analyst one question, and it queried the dataset, calculated every median and average, and built the whole report. Now it's on a Routine, so it re-pulls fresh Product Hunt data and regenerates this exact report every month with zero extra work from me. If you want to see the full interactive version (every rank, every day, a calculator where you drag in your own point count), we're actually launching that Routines feature on Product Hunt this Friday, Sept 4:

Happy to answer questions about the data or the methodology in the comments.

I like this analysis, but I am not sure I would call Saturday the “best day to launch” from this alone. It looks more like the easiest day historically to hit a ranking threshold. For an actual launch, I think category would matter a lot. Product Hunt’s own category data shows pretty different engagement baselines across AI, DevTools, GitHub, etc. I would also want to see the strength of the top 10 on each day, maybe median/75th percentile points rather than only the #1/#5 cutoff, plus comments and ideally overall PH traffic by weekday.

A #3 on Saturday might be easier to achieve, but if there are fewer relevant buyers browsing that day, it may still be a worse launch day for that particular product. Would be really interesting to see this broken down by category × weekday next.

Fair pushback, and you're right that "easiest to rank" isn't the same as "best day for your specific launch." This dataset is points and rank only, no category tags, no traffic source, so I can't slice it by AI vs DevTools vs GitHub. That would need pulling category from each product page individually, which the API doesn't expose in bulk.

The percentile point is a good one too. I only pulled median and average for now, adding p75 by day would show whether the gap holds for a strong launch or just at the threshold. Noting that for the next data pull.

Agree category-weekday is the more useful question if you're optimizing for actual buyers, not just leaderboard position. This is more "here's the competitive floor," not "here's where to find your audience."

The Friday recommendation is the most actionable part for me since weekend launches aren't always realistic for a small team. Do you have a sense of how much the maker's existing followers versus organic traffic drives those top 5 spots?

Honestly, no, and that's a real gap in this data. The public API gives me points and rank, not where the votes came from, so I can't split maker-network votes from organic PH traffic. My guess is the split shifts by day too, since Saturday's smaller pool probably skews more toward people who already know the maker, versus Tuesday where there's more genuine browsing traffic. But that's a guess, not something I can back with numbers from this dataset.

we picked friday too, launching on the 18th. tho PH hides points for the first 4hrs now so on a slow day no one sees how ur doing

Nice, Friday the 18th should line up well based on this data. Good point on the hidden points thing too, that's a real double-edged sword on a slow day. No visible score for 4 hours means less peer pressure to compete, but it also means you can't tell early if you're tracking well or need to push harder on outreach. I'd treat those first 4 hours as "just execute the plan" time since you're flying blind either way, then start watching once points show up. Good luck with the launch.

Mon/Tue numbers are doing more work than the volume explanation allows.

If the bar were mostly set by how many products you're up against, Monday should be the easier of the two. You filed that as a trap. I'd read it as the volume story failing on your own data.

What's left is who picks each day. The maker who launches Saturday isn't a Tuesday maker who moved. Smaller team, no coordinated push and the day is a symptom of that rather than a cause. So some part of that 70 point gap is measuring who chose Saturday, and none of that part comes with you when you move your own launch there.

You can separate the two with data you already have. Across 4962 launches plenty of makers have launched more than once. Compare the same maker across different weekdays. If the day effect survives within a maker, it's the calendar. If it mostly evaporates, most of what you measured is who shows up

This is a sharp point, thank you for laying it out so clearly.

You're right that I flagged the Monday/Tuesday inversion as a curiosity without following through on what it actually implies. If launch volume were the main driver, Monday should be the easier day, not Tuesday. That inversion is evidence against a clean volume story, not just a fun aside.

On the within-maker comparison though, I don't think I can run it cleanly, for two reasons. First, this dataset only captures top-ranked launches per day, not every launch on PH, so a maker who launched twice isn't guaranteed to appear both times. Second, even where I do have two data points for the same maker, the day isn't the only thing that changed between launches, the project, prep, and execution differ too. So a shift or lack of shift in their rank wouldn't isolate the day effect the way the test needs to.

What I can say honestly is that this analysis measures a historical bar to clear on each day, not a controlled effect of the day itself. Some of that bar is who tends to show up on a given day, and I don't have a clean way to separate that from the calendar with this data. Appreciate you pushing on this, it's a fair limitation to be upfront about.
