Folio V1 - Local-first novel writing, now on every desktop

Folio is a free, local-first desktop writing studio for novelists. Draft and organize Markdown chapters, plan beats and story threads, build a Codex, track revisions and snapshots, and export to PDF, DOCX, EPUB, Markdown, or TXT. Muse provides manuscript-aware AI through fully local Gemma or your own cloud API keys - while your book remains on your disk. Available for macOS, Windows, and Linux.

Hey Product Hunt 👋 I started building Folio because I wanted a calm, focused place to write long-form stories without giving up ownership of my manuscript or forcing every creative decision into the cloud. Most writing apps either feel like generic document editors or treat AI as a blank chat box. I wanted AI that understands the manuscript while the book remains stored locally in plain Markdown files. Since our first launch, Folio has grown into a proper V1. We’ve added: - Smart Threads for tracking storylines and unresolved narrative threads across chapters - Codex extraction for identifying characters, places, and lore/connecting them to where they appear - More AI provider options, including support for local models - A visual Story Timeline for structure, tension, POV, locations, and story time - Manuscript-aware Muse conversations - Local snapshots, revision comparisons, and improved export options This V1 is our attempt to make AI genuinely useful for novelists without taking control away from the writer. I’d love to hear what you’re writing, what feels useful, and what Folio should become next. Thanks for taking a look ❤️
