Question of the week: What's the best career advice you ever received?

The best career advice I ever received was: "Don't be afraid to ask for opportunities and put yourself out there. The worst that can happen is that someone says no."

1. Find the smartest person in the room and glue yourself to them. 2. When you're the smartest person in the room, find a new room. 3. After some time, make your own room, and fill it full of smart people.

I recall after myself and half my team had just worked through the weekend at a company building a software platform a meeting called by the company CEO. He was miffed that they had missed a sales target (nothing to do with the software team), he said these sage words: "If you don't like it here, then you can leave." Within a month, half of the development team, including myself had left. Best advice I ever received, and something I hold true to my values for the way we're building our company - never be that.
