All teams that work remotely: How do you improve your company culture?

You barely see in person and sometimes, when you are international in different time zones, you are barely on video meetings + some people working at home can lack socialising.

How do you fix this?

I can see many companies offering some:

– yearly in-person meetings

– meetups at conferences

– co-working allowance

But all of those above mentioned can be difficult financing, especially when you are a startup.

Do you have an approach that can help with remote company culture?

At my job we do yearly company trips and that allows us to really know each other more than any google meet meetings could accomplish since the first trip the whole team has gotten super close and we often joke around in the "random" channel on our discord (could be the same thing on slack). We also set up voice channels where we can hop on and do some virtual co-working and help each other out and just talk about stuff as well.

Which places have you been to with your company? :) Good "retreat" tips are still worth!

Totally relate! Even with structured meetings, real presence is hard to replace. I work remotely while my team is in a co-working space—sometimes I feel disconnected, missing out on spontaneous ideas, quick problem-solving, and the team’s energy. Any practical ways to bridge that gap without big budgets?

The only compensation I can see is to attend entrepreneurial meetups in your city, if they are there.

Great question! Remote culture can be tricky, but small, consistent efforts go a long way. Some low-cost ideas:

Virtual Coffee Chats: Randomly pair teammates for casual, non-work convos.
Game Nights or Trivia: Quick, fun breaks that build camaraderie.
Shoutout Channels: A Slack/Discord space for celebrating wins and milestones.
Async 'Watercooler' Threads: Weekly prompts like What's the best thing you watched this week?

I would love to hear what's worked for others. Do you have any creative ideas?

Remote teams can boost company culture through frequent online gatherings, virtual team-building activities, and clear communication channels. Encouraging adaptability, work-life balance, and recognizing achievements also fosters a positive virtual environment.
