How did you get your first customer? Be honest if it was someone you knew

I'm asking because I don't have mine yet, so I have nothing to trade here except the question.
Every version of this story I read online is clean. Wrote a post, got a signup, closed a deal. The ones I hear in person are much messier and usually involve someone the founder already knew.
So which was yours? And the part I'm actually curious about, did customer number two come from the same place, or did you have to start from zero all over again?

No, a stranger, and I cannot tell you which channel brought them. A visit that begins in a chat window arrives with no referrer, and chat has been our single largest source for a while, so the thing that worked is the thing I can account for least.
What I can account for is everything after they paid. Their domain transfer was rejected at the registrar, so transfer state is now confirmed before setup begins instead of during it. Their marketplace and their tracking tag did not line up, so one market was being scraped against a tag that could never attribute a sale, and a market with no tag of its own is now kept out of the scan entirely rather than quietly returning nothing. Their certificate sat pending long enough that an external check made a working site look broken, so certificate state is read from the provider's own API and a request from a laptop counts as evidence of nothing. None of it was in the part we had spent months on. Disclosure, I sell a done for you version of this.
