How do you keep users from abandoning a slow AI task?

by•

One workflow in my app can take about a minute on the first run because it reads several pages before producing a report. The work is happening, but a spinner makes it feel frozen.

I added clear progress stages and cached repeat runs. That helped, but the first run is still slow.

If your product has a long-running AI or research task, what helped users feel comfortable waiting? Did clearer progress make a difference, or did you have to redesign the task?

i have mostly gamified in a sense that you are rewarded to wait. Instead of a progress bar I've added clear markers on what step the system currently is in and approximately how much time will it take to finish to give users clarity on how long should they wait to see any result.

"That transparency makes a ton of sense—knowing roughly how many seconds are left completely changes the psychology of the wait. Did you find that a static estimation per step works well, or does it dynamically adjust based on how much data the system is processing?
