Our users open our app, do nothing for 8 seconds, and leave. That was the signal.

by•

We analyzed sessions under 30 seconds across 1.2 million visits.

Sessions where the user opened and left within 8 seconds: 17%
Median time to leave for those sessions: 6.4 seconds
Users who did this and never returned: 61%
Most common first page in these sessions: the main dashboard

Nearly a fifth of our traffic was people opening the dashboard, looking at it for six seconds, and leaving without a click. They were not confused. They were checking. They wanted one number or one status, and it was not visible without a click. They left rather than click to find it.

We added a compact status strip at the top of the dashboard showing the three most-checked values. Sessions under 8 seconds dropped from 17% to 7%, and return rate among that group rose 29%. We had been asking people to work for information they just wanted to glance at.

What do your users want to see in the first five seconds, and are you making them click for it?

This is a great reminder that sometimes users aren't lost, they just want the bottom line immediately without doing extra work.
