The Day My Metrics Told Me to Do the Opposite of What Felt Right

by•

My data said the feature was working. Usage was up, engagement was healthy, and the numbers were the kind you screenshot and send to someone.

And I could not shake the feeling that something was off.

So I watched people use it. Ten sessions, no skipping. Nine of them used the feature once, got confused, and never came back. My metrics counted that as interaction. My eyes called it a failure.

There is a version of data that measures what you told it to measure, and a version of reality that exists on the other side of the screen. The gap between them is where most bad decisions live.

Have you ever had a number tell you one thing while a real person showed you the opposite? And which one did you trust?
