The Month I Did Nothing New on Purpose

by•

I set a rule for myself last month. No new features. No new projects. No starting anything.

Just finish what was already open. Close the loops I had been leaving open for months. Answer the emails I had been avoiding. Fix the small things that had become background noise.

It was deeply unsatisfying. There was nothing to show anyone at the end of it. No launch, no announcement, no chart going up.

But it was the most useful month I have had all year. Half my stress turned out to be unfinished things, and finishing them was cheaper than I expected. The work I had been dreading took days, not months. The silence afterward left room to think about what actually mattered next.

Starting is exciting and finishing is quiet. I had been choosing exciting for a long time without noticing the cost.

Do you ever give yourself a month with nothing new? And what would you close if you did?
