The project nobody noticed and the one that would not stop growing

by•

I built two things the same year. One got thousands of visitors in a week. The other got a slow trickle that never really stopped.

I spent all my time on the first one because that is where the attention was. Fed it, fixed it, promoted it. It peaked and faded and now it is a folder I do not open.

The second one I barely touched. I answered the occasional email, fixed the obvious bugs, and otherwise left it alone. It is still running today. Still bringing in a little money. Still sending me messages from people I have never met.

I got the metrics backwards. I optimized for the spike and ignored the slow thing that was quietly compounding.

Attention is loud and revenue is quiet, and loud wins the argument every time.

Have you ever had a small project outlive the one you were proud of? And did you notice in time to do anything about it?
