The question every sales call ends with.

Every sales call eventually gets the same question, and I still don't have a good answer.

Direct honesty means naming the competitor, admitting where they're better, and explaining where I win. It's disarming, it builds trust, and it makes me sound like an adult instead of a salesperson. When someone does that to me, I remember it.

Deflecting means staying positive about my own product, never criticizing theirs, and steering back to what I do well.

It feels safer, it avoids saying anything I'd regret, and it never makes me look insecure.

But deflection also leaves the question unanswered, and unanswered questions don't disappear — they just get answered by someone else, usually the competitor's own marketing.

I've watched founders answer honestly and win deals on trust alone. I've also watched founders be so honest about a competitor's strengths that they talked themselves out of the sale.

When someone asks why you're better, do you answer directly — or do you change the subject and hope they forget?
