The version of success I inherited without noticing
I was talking about my goals with someone and they asked a simple question. Where did that goal come from?
I did not have an answer. I had been chasing a number I had never chosen, in a shape I had never questioned.
Somewhere along the way I had absorbed a picture of what a successful builder looks like, and I had been measuring myself against it without ever asking whether I actually wanted it.
The uncomfortable part is how much of my effort was going toward someone else's definition. Fundraising because that is what serious companies do. Hiring because that is what growth looks like. Building a brand because that is what the people I admired had.
None of it was wrong. All of it was unexamined.
Now I try to ask where a goal came from before I chase it. It is a small question that has quietly changed a lot of
decisions.
Have you ever caught yourself chasing a version of success you never actually chose?
