What do you think about higher education, is it necessary these days?

Recently, we have a discussion about that topic with few friends, I am curious to know what the tech community thinks about this.

From speaking about the viewpoint of technical knowledge, it may not be necessary to learn specific courses that may not be useful in work practices. However, some of the skills can be applied to the profession directly, depending on your job. I think the most important thing about higher education is that it teaches you how to think.

As a Software Engineer, I don't notice that I don't have a degree. Maybe it means it's not necessary for me and people who do similar things.

One underappreciated aspect of going to a large university was just how much it opens your eyes to the opportunities available to you. Coming from a small town and then going to a large public school (Purdue) vastly broadened my perspective of the opportunities available.

I believe it is important. Rather than going with the conventional syllabus, the schools can start teaching the youngsters some social skills- money management, interpersonal skills, and communication skills.

I think higher education comes into play when you have experience in the workforce and is planning to upgrade yourself in knowledge and building new connections. I think if the main purpose of going back to higher education is just for knowledge, it isn't a complete journey as YouTube has tons of learning videos. But throwing in the idea of connecting with new people, that is a whole package done deal. Furthermore it allows you to enter new industries with new prospects.

@shakhmetava_natallia you're welcome! its always something to think about especially in a world that is moving so fast. Like how do we upgrade ourself and be relevant to the world or people around us?

Well, if you have the connections then no, else yes.
Education is of course required - but whether you choose the formal route or the informal route - that is upto the person

If its productive and innovative, otherwise it's just waste of time
