What is the biggest lesson you've learned marketing for a startup?

byโ€ข
This could be your own or working under someone else's startup ๐Ÿ˜Š Mine is probably working on SEO early on when you're first working on your startup. SEO takes time to get going, and if your website is completely new, you can't expect results straight away. Also, you don't need 'paid' tools to get going. I did my initial research with a free trial with SEMrush and then subsidized my results over time with Ubersuggest.

Unless your target customers are other start-ups, don't spend all your time online/social talking to and about other start-ups. It is easy to fall into that when you feel most comfortable talking to like-minded folks, but your customers are the ones you need to connect with.

You must create a valuable community that revolves around your mission! Without one, you really cannot make any progress.

SEO and branding its really tough for a startup brand. But when you work towards your goal and you have the whole team working along everything should be fine. You can expect setbacks though but you gotta be prepared when it comes. I built my own website https://www.camellamanors.com in a period of 2 months. Still I'm glad with all the integrations I have had so far.

My biggest lesson was marketing is not a stand-alone. For good marketing, I need good SEO, for SEO, I need long-form content. For long-form content, I need good copywriting. For good copy skills, I need excellent English skills. I must just go back to school for English lessons lol.

Finding keywords with easy keyword difficulty helped us provide the best results! Since we're still a new company and its harder for us to rank for the more competitive keywords (currently trying to improve our domain authority), targeting the low competition and difficulty keywords we found on semrush and ubersuggest gave us the best results!

@ineventors_canada Yeah this is a great point - literally what I did :)

Find people who are self-motivated, driven and inspired by the mission of your company. Ultimately you need a team that makes things happen. You can always fix the marketing plan and tactical stuff later. But if you don't have the right people onboard no plan will ever see the light of the day.

Nobody cares what you're building, everyone cares if you solve their problem. I kept talking about features instead of the end result for the user.

The biggest lesson I learned was the importance of finding targeted traffic. Just because 1 in 100 people should statistically convert, doesn't mean your traffic will behave accordingly. It's perfectly possibly to send 300 people to your site who hate your product. Conversely, with good targeted ads and SEO, I've seen double digit conversion rates where there were just tumbleweeds before.

Participation in communities. If you were a recluse, you need to get out of the cocoon
