Why do users' survey answers never match their actual behavior?
by•
It hurts spending three solid weeks shipping a feature that less than 5% of your users actually care about. Users are great at pointing out where they feel friction, but the solutions they suggest in feedback forms almost always pull you in the wrong direction.
They ask for something massive, but when it finally launches, it doesn't fit into their real workflow.
What’s your go-to method for filtering out the noise and figuring out what people genuinely need versus what they just think they want?

I read feedback as a pointer to where the friction is, never as the spec for the fix, and then I go to the event logs to see what people actually do at that spot. Two things my logs showed that no form would have: when a song finished generating, 67 of 145 people never pressed play on it, and 40 of 51 song templates had never been opened. Nobody writes "I didn't press play" in a survey, they don't notice it themselves. The fixes were small and mine to design: a finished song now plays itself, and the home screen shows 11 templates with the rest one tap away.
