Why do we mistake endless metric refreshing for actual progress?

I used to have this terrible morning routine of opening my analytics dashboard first thing every single day even before getting out of bed.
It never changed the numbers but it completely dictated my mood for the next few hours.
If traffic dropped, I'd panic and start tweaking things blindly if it went up I'd waste time celebrating instead of building. It felt like being a "data-driven founder," but it was just a sneaky way to avoid hard work.
Have you managed to cut out any of these phantom productivity habits that actually drain your energy?
