Why our automated onboarding emails were driving users away

by•

Quarter we launched an aggressive drip campaign that sent five automated emails to every user during their first week. We wanted to make sure they knew every setting and integration we offered.

Our analytics revealed a spike in account deletions around day four. Users were overwhelmed by messages before they could even learn the basic core interface.

We deleted the -step email sequence entirely and replaced it with a single direct message sent twenty-four hours after signup. That message included one question: what problem were they trying to solve with our tool?

That manual outreach improved our reply rate from two percent to eighteen percent. Sometimes stepping back from automated sequences helps us build relationships with early users.

What is your approach, to welcoming signups without annoying them?

I would stop onboarding messages as soon as someone replies or completes the first useful task

Did the simpler welcome also change how many people came back the following week?
