Breaking Into Startups : Ep8 - Neil Shah - from finance to teaching the homeless to break into tech - Proof that you can break into tech from any background
Today's episode featuring Neil Shah from Code Tenderloin is focused on homelessness, specifically in the heart of San Francisco.
If you've been to San Francisco, you've probably witnessed homelessness that starts on Market Street and goes north into Tenderloin.
The irony about Market Street is the income disparity between billions of dollars invested into startups in SOMA (south of market) and rampant homelessness just north of it.
The homeless people are usually categorized by passersby as "drug addicts" or "lazy", however, according to Neil, it's clear that they are folks who have the drive...they just lack the needed resources.
Think about it...what return address do you put at the top of your resume when you don't have a home? It costs more to keep someone in a hospital or in jail than to give them a home...
In our chat with Neil, he describes how Code Tenderloin gives those with the drive the necessary skills to cross Market Street and take part in the tech economy.
