G'day from Victoria, Australia: IT guy building an app for scoring word games with friends

by•

Hi everyone, I’m Mike from Victoria, Australia.

I’ve spent 30+ years in Internet/IT, running email, DNS and web hosting, and building and running custom applications for clients, mostly in the hospitality industry.

I’m slowing down a little now, and have built something for fun: a web app that lets groups of friends, family or workmates track and compare their daily WORDLE game scores. It started as a way to settle arguments in our own group (and cut down on my manual effort keeping monthly tallies and daily results) and has grown from there.

I’m new to Product Hunt and looking forward to seeing what others are building, and to getting honest feedback on my project before I launch properly. What advice would you give a first-time maker?

Welcome, Mike! Thirty years of running email will help more than you think. The least glamorous part of my own app turned out to be mail: sign in links to Yahoo and AOL addresses sat deferred for anywhere from one to nineteen hours, throttled on the sending service's shared IP rather than for anything in the mail itself. My one piece of advice for a first launch: watch where people stop in the flow, not what they say. Settling arguments in your own group is a great origin, those apps tend to spread inside the group by themselves.
