Why Auditing Defensibility is as critical as Marketing

by

For years, startups obsessed over two things:

1/ Marketing
2/ User acquisition

But in the AI era, there is a third layer most founders ignore:

Defensibility

Today, software can be built faster than ever.
Features can be copied in days.
Entire SaaS categories can be compressed into one AI interface.

So the real question is no longer:

“How do I get more users?”

The real question is:

“If I get users… can I keep my position?”

Because growth without defensibility creates a dangerous loop:

Launch → Acquire users → Competitors copy → Category commoditizes.

And suddenly your product becomes just another feature inside tools from companies like OpenAI or

surfaced by answer engines like Perplexity AI.

This is why founders should start auditing sovereignty and defensibility the same way they audit marketing funnels.

Questions like:

- Is our positioning distinct or drifting toward commodity language?
- Do AI answer engines recognize us as an authority?
- Is our value instantly clear to new users?
- Are we building unique proof of work or just assembling APIs?

Marketing brings attention.

Defensibility protects the territory you build.

Without it, growth only accelerates commoditization.

Curious how other founders here think about this.

Do you believe defensibility should be audited the same way we audit growth and acquisition?
