Why we killed the 1-to-5 smiley face scale (and how AI is fixing mood tracking)

by

If you open almost any mood tracker today, you’re asked to rate your day on a 1-to-5 scale of cartoon smiley faces. It’s clinical, it’s boring, and it forces the infinite complexity of human emotion into tiny boxes.

We built Lumivel to completely rethink this. Instead of picking a face, you just vent into your mic or take a tactile "Sensory Quiz." We then use Google’s Gemini AI and Russell’s Circumplex Model to plot your exact psychological coordinates, transforming your mood into a generative, breathing Aura color, a poetic reading, and a customized ambient soundscape.

I’m curious to hear from the PH community:

  1. Why do you think retention is usually so low for mental health/habit-tracking apps?

  2. Have you ever found a utility app that actually feels like a "sanctuary" rather than just another data-entry chore?

Would love your thoughts (and any feedback on Lumivel)!
