Looking for a Stay alternative on a Mac in 2026: what each app does
People still ask what to use instead of Stay, and many old threads about it are out of date: Stay is free now. I wrote down where it stands today, the fixes that need no app, and what Display Maid, Moom, Rectangle Pro, Putback, Workflo and Snapset do according to their own sites. I make Many Displays, so the page also says where my app may not suit you.

nice that the page says where your own app might not fit. which of those handles a laptop going from one external monitor to two without everything piling onto the main screen?
Thanks! Any tool that keeps a layout per combination of displays should fit that, because one monitor and two monitors count as separate setups. Stay and Display Maid say they work this way, and both can restore automatically when a display connects, but you store each set yourself. I haven't tested the others, so check their sites. Many Displays also keeps one per combination, with nothing to store. The first time it sees the two monitors it starts from the closest setup it knows, then remembers where you put things. After that, going between one and two puts everything back by itself.
