What makes a chat widget useful on a site, beyond sitting in the corner waiting to be clicked?
We're Dani and Ross, the owners of N8N Chat UI, and we launched on Product Hunt today.
One thing we're curious about from people building with n8n: what makes a chat widget useful on a site, beyond sitting in the corner waiting to be clicked?
The widget has a small JavaScript API, so you can start a chat from almost anything.
The example we keep coming back to is e-commerce: if a shopper's been on the checkout page for a couple of minutes, pop the widget open and ask if they have questions about shipping or returns.
You can also send the page, user or cart context to your n8n workflow with each message, so your agent knows why the chat started.
Other triggers we've seen or thought about:
a button like "Ask about this product"
a form submission
a URL parameter
an idle timer
What would you use? Exit intent, cart value, time on a pricing page, something else?
And if you've built your own version of this with n8n's default chat widget, we'd love to hear how you did it.

A failed coupon or unavailable shipping option seems a better trigger than idle time. Show a small help button beside the error and pass that error into the chat so the shopper does not have to explain it again.
@al_kub Exactly! We have something like this for ecommerce stores which allows a higher conversion rate, plus a lot better communication between the customer and the shop.
