OpenAI acquires TBPN, the buzzy founder-led business talk show [streaming about tech, AI news]
TBPN is a daily live show focused on technology, business/startups, and AI.
It has been generating around $30 million annually, so that's why the acquisition is estimated to be ~$100–300M.
The show has already hosted major names like Mark Zuckerberg, Satya Nadella, and Sam Altman.
And now, OpenAI bought this media company (so it means it will have more media power to influence / and trendset what the show will be broadcast)
It is questionable whether the show can maintain its editorial independence and be objective when covering the very company that owns it.
Do you consider this a smart distribution strategy? (positioning themselves as a trusted source)
Or a move to shape public perception opinion on what "should be admired or hated"?

If TBPN keeps the editorial independence, this could become a powerful channel for thoughtful tech conversation. If not, people will feel the shift immediately.

@takitajwar17 If their entire broadcast is about OpenAI, people might get bored quickly. I can also follow their Twitter and other social media to see what's going on with the company.
But that way, you can quickly tell if they're really bringing industry news and not just company news.

@blakeskrable I can clearly see that every episode will be about Open AI :D
TBPN's value was never the production quality or the guest list. It was that the hosts had no institutional allegiance that's what made Zuckerberg and Nadella comfortable being candid on the show. Acquiring the whole company is an unusual move when a distribution deal gets OpenAI most of the same reach. The credibility problem isn't the partnership, it's the ownership structure. Audiences notice when the show's parent company becomes the most consequential story in tech.
Editorial independence clauses exist, but they get tested exactly once, the first time OpenAI is the story that needs covering hard. That's the moment worth watching.

@arun_tamang To be honest, I only found out about TBPN yesterday. :D So they weren't that well-known (at least in my bubble). I guess there's still room for improvement.

@busmark_w_nika I would definitely go with the latter, based upon the scrutiny they faced for many years. As well, they still have a pretty negative perception within the global public and many areas and many different demographics of users. So this approach is a great way to spread information at a mass level to fix their public perception....IMO of course ;)

@jdsalbego They will be forming an opinion, that's for sure. But people have thankfully more source of information so this will not save them completely :D
