How do you handle pocket money at your place?

We launch Quiddo here on Wednesday, and before then I'd like to hear how other families handle something we've argued about at our place for years.

My wife and I have four kids. Our rule is that everyday jobs, like emptying the dishwasher or feeding the cats, aren't paid, but if they don't get done, pocket money waits until we decide whether to release it. Bigger jobs, like washing the car, earn extra on top.

Some parents think tying pocket money to chores teaches kids they only help the family when they're paid. Others think pocket money should be earned, full stop. Plenty of families skip pocket money altogether.

What do you do, and how old were your kids when you started? If you tried something that didn't work, I'd like to hear that too.
