When we first built StudentAI, we thought speed was the biggest problem. Students were spending hours getting started, structuring ideas, finding sources. So like most tools, we focused on helping them generate answers faster. But what we started noticing was different. Students weren’t struggling just because of time. They were getting stuck in the process of learning. Starting from a blank page. Not knowing how to structure a paper. Not being able to test if they actually understood something. AI was helping them skip steps, but not necessarily helping them learn better. That’s what pushed us to rethink everything. Version 2 came from a simple shift: Don’t replace the hard parts. Support them. Instead of building tools that “do the work,” we started building tools that help students move through the loop: write → test → get feedback → improve. That’s how the Research Paper Writer and Practice Tests came out as the two core experiences. The process itself was very iterative. We kept stripping things back. Removed features that felt impressive but didn’t actually help learning. Focused on flow over features. What you see now is a more opinionated product. Less about giving answers. More about helping students think, structure, and improve. Curious to hear how others are thinking about this shift.
