Best way to collect reviews with small user base?

I would like to gather a few quality reviews for our product, but I've hit a roadblock. Our users haven't opted-in to marketing emails, so I can't directly reach out to ask for feedback. (UK-based company, we'd be breaking GDPR). After launching on PH, it was recommended that we get more reviews to social proof our product—that makes sense! But I've seen brands share some questionable reviews on their websites 😅 and I'd rather collect 3-4 genuine ones. Right now, I'm thinking of adding a pop-up or banner inside our web app to ask users for feedback, and I'm slowly building a proper marketing email list for the future. Meanwhile, does anyone have any creative (and ethical) ways to quickly collect a few solid reviews? Would love to hear what worked for the PH community!

+1 to prompting inside your app. You should also collect them on a 3rd party website like Product Hunt so they build SEO and external social proof. But also why can't you email your users? *All of them* have not opted in to marketing emails? That seems odd

@steveb Thanks, Steve, for this advice. I'm definitely going to set up a prompt within the app. We can email a few users who have opted in for marketing emails, but data protection law prevents us from emailing them all.

Adding a popup or banner to ask users for reviews sounds like a great idea. For example, a message like "Your feedback matters! Help us improve!" or an incentive offer can grab their attention. And the review process should be kept simple. Allow users to leave quick feedback while using the product, and collect their email to request more detailed reviews later via email. Hope this helps! 😊

Add a link to the form at the top of your landing page and blog. Let visitors know you're gathering feedback to improve the product and would greatly appreciate them taking a few minutes to share their thoughts.

We have a discord community and recently created a "hype us" channel where we ask engaged users for reviews. Do you have anyway to build a customer community channel that is informal and easy to manage?

Your in-app idea is smart. I was in the same spot. I politely asked for a written review within our tool’s dashboard, offering a small thank you like a month of premium. I also realized if your product is being treated differently than your team intended, search identity discovery feedback. It’s a useful concept for closing that perception gap. For genuine reviews, direct, contextual asks work best.
