Read Japanese Manga More Effectively with MangaRenshuu

by

Hey everyone! I wanted to share something I've been working on that started as a personal project and might interest some of you.

The Problem: I was struggling to read Japanese manga - constantly getting stuck on kanji and speech bubbles, losing momentum in my reading practice.

My Solution: I built MangaRenshuu, a web-based manga reader specifically designed for Japanese learners.

What it does:

  • Click on any speech bubble to see the extracted Japanese text

  • Toggle romaji button to see romaji text under japanese text

  • Currently features Yotsuba&! and Teasing Master Takagi-san

  • All text was pre-processed using OCR technology

The Process: I used OCR tools to extract and clean text from manga pages, then built a simple but effective interface that I use daily for my Japanese practice.

Why I'm sharing: After using it for my own studies, I realized this might help other Japanese learners too. I've made it open-source and turned it into a proper website.

Looking ahead: Currently there are only a few chapters from 2 manga available. If there's interest, I'm thinking of expanding the library with more content.

What do you think? Is this something that would be useful for Japanese learners? Any manga you'd love to see added?
