Are AI Tool Directories Becoming the Infrastructure for Vertical AI?
Over the past year, we’ve seen an explosion of vertical AI products — tools built specifically for marketing, coding, design, healthcare, legal work, and more.
But something interesting is happening alongside this growth.
A new layer of AI marketplaces and directories is emerging.
Instead of searching randomly on Google or social media, people are starting to rely on curated AI tool platforms to discover what actually exists in each category.
Some patterns I’ve noticed:
1. Discovery is becoming a problem
There are thousands of AI tools launching every month. Finding the right one for a specific workflow is becoming harder.
2. Vertical organization matters
Generic “AI tools lists” aren’t enough anymore. People want tools grouped by use case or industry.
3. AI marketplaces are forming ecosystems
Directories are evolving beyond lists:
tool discovery
comparisons
community feedback
integrations
4. Builders benefit from aggregation
For founders launching AI products, being listed in multiple directories often becomes part of their distribution strategy.
We’re experimenting with similar ideas while building AI Skynet Tools, an AI marketplace + tools directory that tries to organize tools by real-world workflows.
