Best Python side projects that don't feel like a second full-time job?
by•
Working with enterprise tools all day means my brain is fried by the time I get home but I really don't want my Python skills to gather dust.
I tried tackling massive ML projects on the side before but I always end up quitting halfway because they're too heavy. I'm trying to find a balance maybe a lightweight automation or a simple local AI tool that I can hack away at for 30 minutes a day.
What small coding projects did you build that actually held your interest?

A local Downloads organiser could fit. Start with a report of files by type and age, then add a preview of where you'd move them, and finally undo. Each session can leave something usable without needing a model, dataset or hosted app.
A fix looks correct until the code is reverted and the test still passes. The assertion was never about that bug. Build a small mutation checker that breaks functions to verify tests actually fail. It needs no UI, no database, and it stops you from spending weekends debugging phantom test suites.
