My very first Android app, Weather Forecast USA, which I originally published in 2009. Over its lifetime, the app achieved over 10,000 downloads and generated mind-blowing $396 USD in ad revenue. The number of active users peaked in January 2014, with a total of 5,688.
The goal of building it was to learn the ropes of Android development and indie publishing. About two and a half years ago, I open-sourced it and recently updated it with Material Design 3. I guess you won't be able to find a privacy-aware weather app that is as fast and lightweight!

Wow, 2009? That feels like ancient history in the Android world 😂 major props for keeping it going this long.

@henry_turner2 Google Play forces you to either constantly update the app or drop it entirely. Although the app wasn't a financial success, I still use it as a learning project.

Love how light this app is — no 20MB of ads or bloated trackers just to see if it’s raining 👏.

@lexi_bethan It was under 500K before I included a Material Design 3 theme.

Super cool that it’s open source. It definitely feels way more trustworthy than your average weather app.

@gisla_night Thank you! With open-sourcing, I hoped to give the app a fresh push since monetization failed in any case.

“Isn’t it funny how something you created to learn Android has outlasted half the ‘serious startups’ from 2009? 😅

@ava_mitchell3 Perhaps the key is not to take oneself seriously?

Downloaded it for the nostalgia — takes me back to when every weather app wasn’t just a data-hungry monster.

@gregory_dower I think we should fight for the old times. How did we come to accept data-hungry monsters in the first place?

Material Design 3 looks sharp. The UI is clean, but the font might feel a bit squished on smaller screens?

@erica_johnson4 It shouldn't squish on smaller screens. Could you please provide a screenshot somehow, here or on GitHub issues here: https://github.com/vbresan/WeatherForecastUSA/issues
“Privacy-focused + no account needed = instant download for me. That’s honestly rare in weather apps.
@charles_zolat Sad but true. Thank you for your support!
