I'm Max. I've been tooling around as a software developer for five years now. I regularly build and discard things and never launch them out of fear/perfectionism. This app is my first attempt to get over myself.
My wife is Mexican American, half her family speaks Spanish, and I always feel guilty about still not having learned after nearly a decade together. I've false started a bunch of times - high school Spanish, Duolingo, a couple AI apps. The motivation always waned and I'd just peter out and stop trying.
So I built an app to try hacking my way into being at least somewhat conversational. It teaches only the most commonly spoken 1,000 Spanish words, which make up about 80% of conversation, using spaced repetition. Open the app, do it for 10 minutes/day, close the app, come back tomorrow. The app is absolutely improving my listening and comprehension skills. Speaking is to be determined.
