शेर गुस्से से दहाड़ा, "तू इतनी देर से क्यों आया?"
खरगोश बोला, "महाराज! मैं तो समय पर ही आ रहा था, लेकिन रास्ते में एक और शेर मिल गया। उसने कहा कि अब से वही जंगल का राजा है और उसने मुझे रोक लिया।"
शेर आगबबूला हो गया, "कौन है वह दुस्साहसी? मुझे ले चलो उसके पास!"
खरगोश शेर को एक गहरे कुएँ के पास ले गया और बोला, "यही है वह! नीचे देखिए।"
शेर ने कुएँ में झाँका, उसे अपनी ही परछाईं दिखाई दी। वह समझा कि यही दूसरा शेर है, जो उसे घूर रहा है। गुस्से में आकर वह छलांग लगा गया — और सीधा पानी में गिर गया। शेर डूब गया।
