Appwrite 2.0 is the second major generation of the platform. It replaces the engine underneath, rebuilds the Console on top, and expands what a project can hold: relational, schemaless, and vector data, native PostgreSQL and MySQL engines, S3-addressable storage, an OAuth 2.1 and OIDC-compliant identity provider, and the network layer in front of all of it.

App development is complex and, more often than not, repetitive. I started working on Appwrite back in 2019 to abstract that complexity away, so developers could focus on creating value and, more importantly, on having fun writing code.

Over the past few years, we have seen countless developers build their projects with Appwrite, first self-hosted and then on Appwrite Cloud. Along the way, two things became clear. First, convenience came with a tax. You adopted our APIs, our SDKs, and our data model, and the day your project needed something we did not abstract, you were either building plumbing around us or moving off the platform. Second, the way software gets built changed. A large share of code is now written with coding agents, and agents work best with standard protocols they already know, not proprietary abstractions. At the same time, projects on Appwrite grew. Teams running real production workloads needed backups, high availability, traffic control, and their own domains, not just a fast start. Making every builder's life easier now meant meeting them where they already are and being mature enough to stay with them as they scale.

Appwrite 2.0 is our answer. It is the second major generation of the platform. It replaces the engine underneath, rebuilds the Console on top, and expands what a single project can hold. Three principles drove it: speak the protocols developers and agents already use, give them the raw engine when the abstraction is wrong, and own the layer in front of the app, not just the backend.

Here is what ships with Appwrite 2.0:

Native PostgreSQL, the headline of this release: a real PostgreSQL 18 engine provisioned in your project's region with its own hostname, credentials, and TLS, and no Appwrite layer in between. Connect with psql or any driver, bring your own ORM and migrations, and use extensions like PostGIS and pgvector.
Native MySQL on the same terms: MySQL 8.4 by default, reachable from the mysql client or anything that speaks the protocol.
VectorsDB for embeddings and similarity search, with HNSW indexes, cosine, dot product, and Euclidean distance, and built-in embedding models so you do not need a separate vector service.
DocumentsDB for schemaless collections, where two documents in one collection can have different fields and adding a field is a write, not a migration.
An S3-compatible API for Appwrite Storage, so the AWS CLI, the AWS SDKs, rclone, and every S3-aware pipeline work against the buckets you already have.
An OAuth 2.1 and OpenID Connect server, so your project becomes the identity provider and other apps can offer Sign in with your product.
Partner marketplaces through the Apps API and OAuth connect, the path for vibe coding platforms and AI agents that manage a user's Appwrite resources.
Appwrite Domains: register or transfer domains, manage DNS, and get automatic TLS from the Console.
Appwrite Firewall: deny, challenge, rate limit, or redirect traffic before it reaches your API, Functions, or Sites, with a preview of how many requests a rule would match before you save it.
Console IV, rebuilt with TanStack, with the docs, Appwrite Terminal, and Appwrite Explorer living in the same app as your projects.
Hyperloop B, the new coroutine engine underneath everything, delivering 7x the throughput at 6x less memory on I/O bound workloads.

Existing projects keep working. Nothing in this release requires a migration.

Every feature is live on Appwrite Cloud, and the Community Edition ships the complete 2.0 release for self-hosting. First of all thanks for being a part of our launch, really means a lot to us.

About your question, Appwrite Cloud (the managed solution) is scalable and scales based on your usage. The self-hosted version however, would burn out if using one machine with a lot of usage. You would need a lot of DevOps experience to make it work in a more scalable way through Kubernetes, or rely on scaling the infrastructure Appwrite is hosted on.

Appwrite Cloud takes all of the complexity away so you can build the apps you want while the Appwrite platform and the team deals with the (self) scalability of the platform.

I am happy to be part of Appwrite 2.0, especially the OAuth server capabilities! It was an incredible journey to bring this support, and I am excited to see what developers build with it, without spending weeks perfecting their understanding of all RFCs. I already built a few products with this, and alongside improved customisation through apps, this also makes MCP support trivial. Thrilled to see this in developers' hands, allowing all Appwrite projects to remain modern with support for all the AI agents out there.

Appwrite 2.0 is out and I got to work on part of it. Most of the release sits deep in the stack, but the bit I keep coming back to is the new Console. Better views of your resources, notifications, and a live feed of what your project is doing while it does it. Add the analytics on top and you get something I think gets undervalued in a backend platform: you can see what is going on under the hood instead of guessing. Happy with how it turned out and excited for what is coming.

Appwrite 2.0 is a really massive update, and with a massive Init event that happened recently. I can finally say that Appwrite speaks PostgreSQL!

My favourite feature of all is VectorsDB. Appwrite has made it easy with the embeddings API that I can simply make powerful apps with similarity search using VectorsDB. Unlocks a lot of possibilities!

I'm really glad that we've been able to make Appwrite 2.0 happen! We've been able to finally ship our community's highest-demanded features over the last few years: which is native Postgres. I have also been experimenting with a number of new releases, including S3 support for Storage and DocumentsDB, and I've already been able to leverage the latter in a new project I've been working on (essentially an open-source Typeform alternative that benefits from flexible schemas). I can't wait for more developers to build with Appwrite 2.0 and let us know what they think of the same.
