Enabling merchants to use coupons and discounts without fearing automated coupon injection allows them to maximize revenue instead of losing it!
@alexey_stoletny Thank you! We've received similar feedback that many merchants feel a loss of control with coupon extensions and sometimes feel forced to work with them under costly affiliate deals that yield unclear or inconsistent results. With cleanCART, we are hoping to arm our partners with the tools to restore control to their discounting strategy, protect their margins, and no longer fear the big extensions!
Hi everyone,
Thanks for taking the time to check out cleanCART.
❓Why we built it:
Over the course of the past year, e-commerce has experienced unprecedented growth as more and more brands have turned to online retail in the wake of the COVID pandemic.
Coupon and discount codes offer e-commerce businesses opportunities to drive conversions and increase new customer acquisition while providing valuable data about which marketing channels are driving purchase behavior.
While coupon extensions such as Honey and Capital One Shopping are loved by shoppers, they pose a real risk to retailer revenues and marketing ROI measurement.
Coupon extensions function by scraping the discount codes that users manually enter into shopping carts and then sharing them with everyone else who uses that extension.
This means that the limited use codes that merchants give to their best customers, or award to newsletter subscribers, first time buyers, or certain classes of customer such as teachers, first responders or military veterans, are now available to anyone, whether they have earned them or not.
➡️ How it works:
There hasn’t been anything that ecommerce merchants could do to prevent coupon extensions from running on their websites—until now.
cleanCART is a set-it-and-forget-it solution that automatically blocks coupon extensions like Honey from injecting discount codes at checkout on your website. And it does this without interrupting the user experience or slowing down page load speeds.
✅ How you can get access:
cleanCART is currently available for Shopify Plus users (and we’re building a wait list for anyone not on Shopify Plus).
Let us know if you have any feedback or questions—we’re excited to help online retailers take back control over their discount strategies and boost their profit margins with cleanCART!
Feels like an escalation in the ad block war... and seems user hostile, but ok. If I were a merchant, I can see why I'd want this.
I just think inflation is inevitable and the cost of discounts/coupons will eventually be built into the base price.
@chrismessina Hi Chris. Thank you for taking the time to check out the product and share your perspective. We definitely aren't aiming to be user hostile and that's why we don't block coupons - just auto-injection. What we've seen happens when coupon extensions are able to scrape limited use coupons is that merchants stop using discount codes for their marketing because they worry they won't have any control over them. We actually believe this will be good for the user at the end of the day because it will allow merchants to more fully leverage discount code strategies without having to worry their codes will leak.
@kathleen_booth1 I understand that perspective... but if a user has installed an extension to automatically apply coupon codes, aren't you interfering with the user's intentions?
I understand that merchants want to manipulate users into buying more things with discounts, but many merchants from whom I receive email seem to have a promo code in every email — similar to Bed Bath & Beyond's annoying mailers.
These companies wouldn't resort to these tactics if they didn't work, but in response, companies like Honey have emerged to tip the balance back towards the consumer, which had to take on the burden of searching dozens of coupon sites to try to find deals just to bring the price back to a reasonable level.
I guess it sucks on both ends, which is why I originally observed that cleanCART is just another escalation in this never-ending capitalist push and pull between sellers and buyers.
@glen_creaser Thanks for taking the time to provide your feedback. To your question, yes! The plan is to add additional platforms on a regular basis. We are building a wait list for this and will notify anyone who joins it as soon as we go live on their ecommerce platform.
@alexandersaenko Thank you Alexander. That is exactly why we created it - to help online retailers regain control over how the discounts they issue are used and in doing so, protect their profit margins.
