COVID Smell Tracker is a research-based app specifically designed to help patients report and track any smell or taste related symptoms caused by the novel coronavirus.
Hello everyone! My name is Ike, and I am the developer of this app. I am currently an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery at Drexel University College of Medicine located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I sub-specialize in the field of Rhinology, the study of disorders specific the nose and sinuses. I treat many patients with anosmia (the loss of smell), including COVID patients. Losing your sense of smell can be devastating, often dramatically reducing one's quality of life. It can be heartbreaking managing these patients, and thus was the primary inspiration for me to create this app.
An overwhelming number of patients are now suffering from COVID-19 related anosmia, which occurs in approximately 60% of people infected. Most get better in a few weeks, while others can have long-term damage. This app helps gather information that is urgently needed in the academic community to help physicians like myself better understand the severity, prognosis, and management strategies for this particular issue. Additionally, it helps patients easily measure and track their smell and other ear, nose, and throat related symptoms over time.
The app is targeting those whom have experienced symptoms in the past, or are currently experiencing them regardless if they have ever been tested. Anyone, however, is welcome to sign up and submit reports. Thank you for taking the time to check it out!
