OpenChatCut is an open-source ChatCut alternative: local-first AI video editing where Codex, Claude, and MCP agents work on a real multitrack timeline. Free, editable exports, AGPL.
Love the local-first angle and the multitrack timeline with real agent integration. One thing that would make a huge difference for me: a built-in proxy/media cache so 4K footage doesn't bog down the timeline when the agents are running analysis in the background. Would make the whole editing flow way smoother on mid-range hardware.

@aliyegnlcirz8 That is a very practical concern. OpenChatCut currently normalizes incompatible imported media and caches timeline thumbnails, filmstrips, and audio waveforms, but timeline playback still primarily uses the original media.
It does not yet have a complete 4K proxy workflow that automatically creates lower-resolution proxies, uses them during preview, reconnects the original media for export, and provides cache management. On mid-range hardware, playing 4K footage while background analysis is running can therefore still create resource contention. This is a real gap in the current media-performance workflow.
Would love to see a simple preset system for common edits like "remove filler words" or "add jump cuts" so I don't have to prompt the agents for the same workflow every time. Could be a small dropdown that bundles the right tool calls together.

@gllilaw Thanks—this is a very practical direction. OpenChatCut already supports filler-word removal and lets users create, save, and activate custom Skills for reusable editing instructions.
What it does not yet have is a dropdown that bundles deterministic tool calls into one-click editing presets. The current Skills are closer to reusable workflow guidance than fixed macros, so the preset system you described would fill that gap.
A collab mode would be huge, like letting two people hop on the same timeline remotely with comments pinned to specific clips. Since the agents already touch the project files, feels like a natural next step for a local-first tool.

@hikmetcantekin Thanks—this does feel like a natural collaboration direction for a local-first tool. OpenChatCut can share project storage across browser environments on the same machine and can export or import complete project files.
It does not yet support real-time multi-user editing, remote synchronization, or comments pinned to specific clips. The current editing model is still single-user.
finally a chat based editor that doesn't lock my timeline away, ran a quick cut with claude and the export actually stayed editable which is more than i expected from something free.

@ela5lsr Thanks! Keeping the timeline genuinely editable, rather than producing a black-box video that cannot be adjusted afterward, is one of OpenChatCut’s core goals.
I’m glad the quick Claude editing workflow worked well for you, and that the editable export exceeded your expectations.
honestly the multitrack timeline with MCP agents sounds super cool, but one thing i'd really want is a way to save and share edit "recipes" or agent prompts so i can reuse the same workflow across projects. basically a little library for your favorite prompt chains that you can drop in whenever.

@serhatkulaber Part of the foundation for this already exists. OpenChatCut lets users create, update, and save custom Skills, install them from a file or URL, and reuse them across projects.
What it does not yet have is a dedicated library for organizing, exporting, and sharing prompt chains or exact tool-call “recipes.” The current Skills are reusable agent workflow instructions rather than a complete shareable automation-recipe system.
Love the local-first approach and editable exports being free. One thing that would help a lot is proxy media generation so 4K timelines stay snappy on lower end machines. Would also be great if the AI agents could remember project wide style choices between sessions so you don't have to re explain your color grade each time.

For proxy media, OpenChatCut currently caches thumbnails, filmstrips, and audio waveforms, but timeline playback still primarily uses the original media. A complete low-resolution 4K proxy generation and automatic switching workflow is not implemented yet.
For style memory, the selected Design Style and Creative Mode are already persisted per project across sessions and automatically injected into the agent’s context. Applied color and filter settings are also stored in the project document. However, the agent does not yet automatically turn a grading preference mentioned in chat into long-term memory unless it is saved as a Design Style or custom Skill.
Local-first multitrack editing with agent support sounds genuinely useful. One thing that would make a huge difference for me is a simple undo history that spans across agent-driven edits, so I can roll back a whole AI cleanup pass without losing my manual tweaks from before.

@recep7qkz The built-in agent proposal flow already supports this: the selected group of agent edits is applied as one atomic operation. A single undo can therefore roll back the entire AI cleanup pass while preserving the manual editing history that came before it.
The current distinction is that multiple tool calls made directly by an external Claude or Codex agent through MCP are not automatically grouped into one agent-session transaction. They enter the normal undo history separately. Named project snapshots provide a broader rollback option.
