What's great

I used Tableau extensively to visualize environmental monitoring and time-series data. It was especially useful for turning large, complex datasets into dashboards that clients and stakeholders could quickly understand. Once the data was cleaned and structured, building charts and interactive views was fairly intuitive and gave us a lot of flexibility.

What needs improvement

One caveat was working with very large, high-frequency datasets. Performance and workbook management could become cumbersome, even with the use of Tableau Prep, so we often had to do quite a bit of data preparation and optimization before getting to the visualization stage. Tableau was a great visualization layer, but it wasn’t a replacement for the data infrastructure needed behind it.

vs Alternatives

I considered tools like Power BI and more traditional Excel-based workflows. Tableau was the best fit for us because of its flexibility with complex visualizations, strong support for interactive dashboards, and the ability to pair it with Tableau Prep for structuring and reshaping data. It also had a large user community, which made it easier to find solutions when building more specialized visuals.

I'm comparing Tableau with my previous experience using PowerBI. It seems to me that, generally, Tableau is much more complex, less focused on key functionalities from a data analysis perspective and more focused on data visualization. For instance, it is not possible to calculate measures with context, particularly relevant, time context (as it is on PowerBI). You have to prepare your data to this. Additionally, it is much harder to find people who understand how to operate, be it partners or employees, although it might be a limitation specific of my region (Brazil).
