Usage works great for me because I'm addressing fundraising and users will likely have some months where they need more and some months where they need less. The flexibility suits all parties.

Monetisation and distribution have to be part of the initial idea. I wouldn't build anything before having conviction in my ability to monetise and distribute it. Monetisation as an afterthought is a bit like shooting before you've picked something to aim at.

I don't know much about the monetizable market for this but gut tells me that people that pay for news would rather have the detail than the brevity. If I were you I would find out what people are currently paying for and why. Unfortunately not all good ideas make good companies :)

For me woodwork really scratches the itch of wanting to do something with your hands. Partly because it requires focus but also because you're in close contact with what you're working on, it's tactile, simple but also challenging enough to be engaging for extended periods of time.
