About

I'm Santhosh MJ, a young founder from India passionate about gaming, technology, and building things that make a difference. I'm the founder of Niya Interactive Games, an indie game studio where we're working on original, story-driven games, starting with our 2D action-adventure game, Sky Knights. I'm also exploring a cloud and edge gaming platform that makes gaming more accessible and convenient for players, without requiring everyone to own expensive gaming hardware. My goal is to build products that solve real problems for gamers, learn from the community, and connect with people who share similar interests. In the long term, I hope to grow my studio into a world-class game development company and contribute to the future of the gaming industry.

Decoupling game ownership from edge streaming: A hybrid architecture idea

As a developer looking at the current state of cloud gaming and digital distribution, I've been running into a major structural contradiction.

On one side, traditional cloud gaming forces users into a monthly subscription rental model where they never truly own local files or game data. On the other side, local gaming requires users to invest in increasingly expensive hardware. The industry treats "owning a game" and "executing a game" as a single bundled product.

I ve been exploring a hybrid concept and wanted to get thoughts from other makers here:

  1. The Ownership Layer: A GOG-style approach where users buy and download actual local files for offline play, giving them absolute ownership with zero subscriptions.

  2. The Convenience Layer: An optional edge/cloud-streaming network that acts as a runtime environment for those already-owned files when users are on weaker hardware or traveling, bridged via real-time save-state syncing.

Do gamers actually want ownership from a cloud gaming platform?

Cloud gaming solved one major problem: Hardware limitations. You don't need an expensive gaming PC to play demanding games. But while researching cloud gaming, we found another problem. You're still essentially renting access to the gaming experience.

That made us ask: What do gamers actually want from cloud gaming?

So we started talking to gamers and researching the market. Three things kept coming up: Ownership, Accessibility, Freedom. That's where Project YGC Your Game, Your Choice started.
