So it started about a year ago, the new tools like claude code, lovable, bolt opened a door that had been closed for a long time for me - software development. I started building apps, SaaS, workflows, you name it. Free flowing creativity, an amazing feeling. At the same time, the tensions in the (software) world become more and more present - EU companies started talking about "sovereign cloud" and the US hyperscalers started selling it. Or something they claimed to be sovereign. Turns out it is not. At all. The US Cloud Act gives the right for the US government to access all data hosted by US providers, regardless of the server location. If you put your data in Frankfurt or Ireland or anywhere else in the EU, the Cloud Act still applies as long as the parent company is US owned. And most are.
And, since all the tools I used defaulted to Supabase or Firebase, my data was potentially exposed. And I could not find an EU alternative with the DX and the power of the US alternatives. And I did not want to self-host, I wanted to start building in 5 minutes.
Since there was nothing on the market, I decided I would build a EU-data-friendly BaaS. How hard can it be? Very hard it turns out, but after 6 months of development, I have something that works and is quite secure. It does not have all the features of the big ones (yet), but it runs on 100% EU infra so you do not have to fear/risk that your data will be accessed. The aim was to offer database, functions, auth, vault, object storage in the first release - and we have it. Next on the roadmap is compute and later inference.
Closed beta is running, some 100 users are testing, and now we are ready for the next step. Test it, there is a free tier and it works. Feedback, support, praise and complaints are equally welcome. --Stefan
