I've noticed that some UI terms are easy to mix up, especially when working across different platforms.

For example, iOS uses "Navigation Bar" for the top area with a title and actions, while Material Design calls a similar component a "Top App Bar."

And on Android, "Navigation Bar" can refer to the system navigation area at the bottom of the screen.

These aren't just different names for the exact same component. Each platform has its own terminology, guidelines, and interaction patterns.

I think finding good design references is the easy part. Figuring out what to take from them is much harder.

For example, you find a dashboard with a really clean layout. But is it good because of the spacing, the information hierarchy, or simply because it has less data than your product?

I've been thinking about a few things worth checking before borrowing a design pattern:

• Context: What problem is this design solving, and is it similar to ours?

• Structure: Does the layout still work when the content gets longer or more complex?

• Interaction: What happens in empty states, errors, or when users need to go back?

• Tradeoffs: What did this product simplify or leave out to make the experience feel clean?

It's way too easy to get stuck in an endless loop of polishing your product because perfection feels safe. You keep telling yourself that the next UI update or feature tweak is what's going to make the difference, while the actual core problem sits untouched. I delayed a simple launch for a month just because I wanted the onboarding screens to look like a big tech company's. How do you force yourself to ship the messy version instead of waiting for it to be completely spotless?
