My friend Paul and I fell for Chinese while studying in Beijing and later in Suzhou. Like most learners who get serious, we ended up in Anki: building our own decks, fixing them, keeping them alive. It worked, but it took hours before the first card was ready. And reading, listening, speaking and writing never fit on a flashcard anyway.
So we built Gushi: the whole language in one app, with spaced repetition deciding what comes back and when.
The Chinese exam changed: the new HSK 3.0 has nine levels and 11,000 words. Gushi covers all nine, in English, German, Spanish and French. Every character comes with its tone, its parts, a story that holds it and where its shape came from. Spaced repetition decides what comes back and when. Reading, listening, speaking, writing and mock exams in one app, on phone and laptop. And language schools can see how their students are doing on the Teaching Platform.
