A year and $140K for FDA clearance. What I'd tell myself on day one.

I'm a solo founder. I make an LED light therapy mask, and I decided early that I wanted FDA 510(k) clearance rather than selling it as a generic beauty gadget. Many LED masks sold online aren't FDA-cleared at all, which tells you something about how painful the process is.

Twelve months. Roughly $140K. One person.

The single most expensive mistake I made was assuming a testing lab is a testing lab.

I picked one based on price and turnaround. Their reports looked professional. What I didn't check was whether their accreditation actually covered the specific standards my submission needed. It didn't. The data was unusable, and I had to run the testing again somewhere else months gone, and a large chunk of that $140K was just paying twice for the same tests.

Launching Photira on Product Hunt this Tuesday

Hey PH community! I'm launching Photira this Tuesday (July 28) an FDA-cleared (510(k) K254007) LED light therapy mask with red, blue, and near-infrared modes, priced at $199 instead of the usual $400-500+ for clearance-backed masks.

Before launch day, I'd love to hear from anyone who's used LED masks before: what made you trust (or not trust) a brand's FDA claims? And what's the biggest friction point in choosing one?

Photira - FDA-cleared LED mask with 3 wavelengths, at half the price

Photira is an FDA-cleared (510(k) K254007) LED light therapy face mask combining red, blue, and near-infrared wavelengths in a single device. Most LED masks are either uncleared with unverified claims, or FDA-cleared and priced at $400-500+. Photira brings the same clearance-backed technology — 144 medical-grade LEDs, three light modes for wrinkles and mild-to-moderate acne — to $199.
