Makers from Calm launch mental health for men
Men, what’s your app of choice for mental health support?
It’s understandable if nothing comes to mind. But some founding team members from Calm want to change that.
“We massively scaled Calm but we failed to get through to men,” explains maker Anson Whitmer. “Nobody does though. There are 20k mental health apps. Many have been built for women. General use ones are used 2-3x more by women.”
So motivated by his personal experience of losing loved ones to suicide and the realization that the culture around mental health for men is different than for women, Whitmer started Mental.
Mental is a mental health app described to be “like the science-backed content and protocols of Andrew Huberman, but fun and without taking up 25 hours of your day.”
So far, the app features coaching via AI versions of “legendary" men, and cold shower protocols where a Master Chief Navy SEAL teaches you how to handle the stress of cold water and the benefits of doing so.
As serious as that may sound, the Mental team emphasizes the importance of humor in the app. For example, users can listen to an audio series called the “Daily Deuce,” which drops two to three minutes of wisdom on you in the form of “mentaltainment.”
