Plants, chapters, heartbeats

gm legends

Saturday, so three things people built for themselves first: a break reminder shaped like a wilting plant, a word processor from a novelist you've read, and an app that beats like a heart until you fall asleep.

Hot on the leaderboard today
The plant has a better sense of time than you
  • Mossy A desk plant that wilts when you need a break

Mossy is a break reminder for the Mac shaped like a plant, sitting in the corner of your screen and wilting the longer you stay in your chair. It never takes over the screen, so ignoring it is a normal way to use it. You tell it in one sentence what your body needs, hips, lower back, whatever it is, and it writes your breaks from that; the maker sits about ten hours a day, tore his ACL last October, and his wife is an architect at the same laptop with a one-year-old at home.

  • NeoA novel-writing tool from the author of Silo

Neo is a word processor for writing novels, made by Hugh Howey, who wrote Silo, for people who want to open an app and type and do nothing else in it. Chapters number themselves and renumber when you drag them around, and typewriter mode holds the line you're writing in the middle of the screen. There's no draft assistant in it anywhere, which from a bestselling novelist is a choice, and the one AI thing he's working on is a fingerprint that proves a manuscript was typed out by a person over months.

  • LubbA realistic heartbeat for falling asleep

Lubb is an iPhone app that pulses like a heartbeat in your hand, driven by the Taptic Engine, so it's something you feel against you in the dark instead of another sound coming out of a speaker. You hold it or tuck it beside you and fall asleep to the rhythm. Oğuzhan Taşımaz built it for the nights when you're alone or missing someone, pointing at Bruce Perry's What Happened to You? on how rhythm settles the body, and there's no tracking, no sleep score, nothing to review in the morning.
