An idea about how to write our launch day comments

by•

In my experience, launch page comments tend to be either congratulatory and good luck or ask a question that has been asked before in the description. Both are very nice comments, but neither provide the creator any value.

The comment that singles out a specific component is much more valuable. Noting that the export screen saved you a step that you would typically take in Excel tells the creator how to preserve their creation. Likewise, noting where in the process you were lost is valuable feedback; both can take about twenty seconds to write.

In commenting today, I adhere to one principle - talk about something I tried and pose one question I can't answer using the content on the page. It results in fewer comments, but the answers are more meaningful, and a couple even started a dialogue.

Would it be helpful for the community to get some light suggestion in the comment box or is it too much of an interference? I won't mind being told that it was a terrible idea. How do you come up with something to say on a launch you've never heard of?

The same rule works in the forums. I try to bring one concrete thing from my own work and end with a question, and the replies that turned into real conversations were the ones where the other person asked something back, like how I handle a written decision once it stops being true. One addition for launch pages: if you haven't tried the product yet, say what you would want to know before trying it. That is still more useful to the maker than good luck.
