Does it make sense to invest in defense now? Even a Z-gen African startup raised $11M+ for that.
We won’t pretend that the world isn’t tense, because relations between countries are increasingly strained. (Coming from a country that never had technological or numerical superiority, we’ve mostly become just part of the regime.)
But not everyone is on the same page, and countries are investing in defence.
Today, this news from Techcrunch grabbed my attention:
Terra Industries, a Nigeria-based defence startup founded by 22-year-old Nathan Nwachuku and 24-year-old Maxwell Maduka, raised $11.75M to build autonomous defence systems that help African governments protect critical infrastructure. The company focuses on drones, surveillance systems, and real-time intelligence software to reduce reliance on foreign defense intelligence and strengthen Africa’s security sovereignty.
– Do you see more potential in this opportunity?
– How do you approach innovation like these? (tho we all want peace)
I'm also starting to wonder if there's a potential to invest in self-defense in the form of training.

Financially it can obviously make sense to invest in defense currently. And there are certainly also countries where it is ethically justified to support their defense. Looks like world peace is not in sight yet, unfortunately...

@konrad_sx I am afraid that Armoury will become a business of 2025 – 2035

I have honestly toyed with the idea of an MSP for not quite billion dollar net worth individuals that is basically doomsday bunker time shares/fractional ownership.
As for investing in self defense. Yeah, worth it, both from an opsec and from a personal safety perspective.
This is a field where founders will usually need government clearance in some countries.
As for private sector where I live, the industry might be too high risk for me. Not financial risk, just bodily harm risk.

@build_with_aj Have you ever invested in a defence company or something related to weapon manufacturing?

@busmark_w_nika Not directly.
I've held shares of the S&P500 so I think some defense contractors are in there.
If anything I would invest in energy right now, that and water futures.

@build_with_aj aaa, okay, as soon as you invest in ETFs or S&P500, the portfolio is slightly "managed".
