How are you deciding which new AI models are worth testing?

New models land almost every week. Today it was ByteDance’s Doubao 1.5 Pro Vision. Meanwhile, things like more affordable compute through the IndiaAI Mission could matter more for small teams over time.

For those of you shipping AI products: how do you decide what’s worth evaluating and what to ignore? Do you have a process, or is it mostly gut feel?

Two filters before gut feel. First, does it have an official API I am allowed to build on. In music that alone removes most of the noise, because a lot of what gets hyped is a wrapper around someone else's account farm, and I learned the hard way with an earlier app that those break overnight. Second, does it fix a failure I can already count. I log every failed run with a cause, so a new model is worth an afternoon only if it attacks the top cause. Then the test itself is cheap because every vendor sits behind one small interface in my backend: one script, my own fixed set of inputs, listen side by side. That is how the current engine got picked, and the old one stayed on as the fallback.
