How did you catch and fix invisible friction points onboarding that you were completely blind to?

by•

When you live inside your own product every single day, you forget what it's like to see it with fresh eyes. Every button, label, and navigation menu feels completely obvious to you.

Then we watched session recordings of our first few real signups. It was painful. Users were getting completely stuck on things we assumed were intuitive, dropping off before they even touched our primary feature.

For builders and indie hackers: what methods or tools finally opened your eyes to your own onboarding blind spots?

Two rules from my onboarding that come from things I could not see in my own language on my own phone. The steps cross fade in place, so if one step's text is a line shorter than the next in some language, the button jumps under the reader's thumb between steps. That is why every title and subtitle is exactly two lines in every language. And a bright frame in one background photo made the subtitle unreadable, so the text sits on our own dark gradient instead of on the photo. The method behind both: look at every screen in every language and in both themes, not just the one you build in.
